Novak Djokovic had a stellar season last year, showing his dominance throughout the season clinching 3 out of 4 Grand Slam titles. But the 2024 season didn’t start well for the 24-time Grand Slam champion. He suffered a shocking exit at the hands of the current Australian Open champion, Jannik Sinner at the SF of the tournament.

Since then, more than the outcome of the match, the manner of Djokovic’s defeat has been the focal point of all the discussions in the tennis world. Plenty of questions are being raised about the Serbian superstar. Is Novak Djokovic finished? Is he fit enough to win his 25th Grand Slam? Well, recently Serena Williams‘ former coach Rick Macci gave the answers to all the doubters.

As per the latest UTR rankings the 22-year-old Italian, Jannik Sinner has replaced Novak Djokovic from the top of the list. Sinner had won three out of his last four matches against Djokovic. But so what? Rick Macci still considers him a genuine contender for the rest of the Grand Slam events for this year. Here’s what he said on his YouTube channel recently.

Hey guys, let’s talk a little bit about Djoker okay? Uh! You know tough match against Sinner. Sinner got a lot of confidence being there, done that. But listen this guy is so special, you know what a role model. You know to be out there at this age, what he did last year. Three out of four slams, you know it’s unbelievable. You know, barring injuries he’s not going anywhere. There’s no new sheriff in town. He’s going to be right in there, okay. As long as he’s healthy, he’s a contender for every slam,” Rick Macci.

The 69-year-old American tennis coach further added, “He has a lot of motivation. He made it clear it’s not the beginning of the end, he has nothing to play for. But he’s one of the best competitors and of the mentally strongest players that has ever picked up a racket.

Robbie Koenig isn’t ready to write off Djokovic

The South African former tennis player and commentator has expressed his belief in Novak Djokovic’s comeback this year. Koenig recently appeared in the Tennis Channel Inside-In Podcast where he said, “I’m not sure he was playing that well the whole tournament. Let alone just that match. I’m not going to write that guy off, no chance. I mean, the guy won four of the five biggest tournaments last year. I’m picking Novak for at least two Majors this year.

Even, Serbian former tennis player Viktor Troicki shared his support for his compatriot. He believes Djokovic’s resilient mindset and fighting spirit will make his comeback sooner than ever before. Djokovic is currently spending time with his family in the South Tyrol province of North Italy. He will next play at the Indian Wells which kick starts on March 6. Can he make a comeback?
