The world of tennis has countless captivating and compelling stories to tell. Of course, most stories that tennis fans read about tend to be about the sport’s most prominent names like Roger Federer, Serena Williams, and others who have conquered every figurative mountain that exists in the sport. However, from time to time, there comes a story that’s more about guts and grit and less about Grand Slams and glory. The story of Kemit-Amon Lewis is something similar.

Lewis, a marine biologist who lives in Florida, fell prey to a bacterial infection that nearly ended in an untimely death. However, Lewis survived, but he had to settle for a quadruple amputation. Miraculously, Lewis’ loss of limbs, despite being a harrowing experience, didn’t do much to unnerve him. Instead, it made him stronger.

Lewis grew up watching tennis and was an avid player of the sport as well. However, his infection, triggered by an unknown bacterium, cut his time on the court short. There was a time following his amputation, during which Lewis probably thought that he could never play tennis again. Thankfully, prosthetics came to his rescue, and his mental strength also helped him.

The remarkable story of Lewis’ recovery was shared recently by Wilson Sporting Goods on the brand’s official YouTube channel. Over the years, Wilson has established itself as one of the best manufacturers of tennis equipment. Right now, Lewis is an advisory staff member who helps the brand to create rackets for him. Today, Lewis can play tennis, but he prefers pickleball.

In the YouTube video, Lewis says, “The idea that the same company and the professional engineers that build rackets for professional tennis players are with the same energy focused on creating tools that will work for me is really amazing”. What’s more amazing is Lewis’ mindset following his devastating loss of limb. “There really isn’t a limit to what the human body can do when the human mind is in the right frame.”

Williams won 23 singles Grand Slam titles during her career, which makes her the most successful tennis player in the Open Era. Federer, a master of the game, won 20 singles Grand Slam titles. Federer also holds the record for the most Wimbledon titles on the ATP Tour. He won 8 Wimbledon Championships before retiring last year.
