Prior to his marriage with Patti McGuire, the American former world no.1, Jimmy Connors was involved in a romantic relationship with the 18-time Grand Slam champion, Chris Evert. The American tennis stars met each other at a very young age during their glorious tennis journey. However, due to some personal issues, the popular tennis couple split after their engagement.

Later on, Connors revealed various things about his romantic relationship with his former partner. In the book titled, “The Outsider: A Memoir,” Connors also talked about Evert’s mother, Colette Thompson. He further stated that “Mrs. Evert” didn’t trust him while he was dating her tennis star daughter.

Jimmy Connors once talked about Chris Evert’s mother

The 8-time Grand Slam title winner made a surprising revelation about his former partner’s mother in his autobiography released in 2013. Jimmy Connors talked about an incident that happened during the 1974 Wimbledon. The former American tennis player further stated that he booked a restaurant, the Playboy Club, that was located in Wimbledon Village.

Connors went on to say that his compatriot, Chris Evert, also booked into the same hotel. He said, “In 1974, Chrissie was booked into the same hotel, too. (OK, so she was with her mother, but then when wasn’t she?) Mrs. Evert seemed to go everywhere with Chrissie, all summer long, right across Europe, and I guess rightfully so—Chrissie was a teenager, after all.”

The American former world no. 1, stated that Evert’s mother was very protective of her daughter.  He went on to say, “But whenever I turned around, Mrs. Evert was there, watching. It was almost like she didn’t trust me. Crazy, I know. America’s Sweetheart and the most hated guy in tennis. What could possibly go wrong there?”

Connors was intimidated by Evert’s father as well

In his book, “The Outsider: A Memoir,” Connors stated that he kept his engagement with the 18-time Grand Slam champion a secret. He further revealed the reason by stating that Evert’s father was yet to give him permission to marry his tennis star daughter. Connors went on to say that he got intimidated during his meeting with Jimmy Evert.

The American tennis star once met Evert’s father in Fort Lauderdale and he was very nervous when they struck up a conversation. Connors further stated that he had no idea whether “Mr. Evert” was happy with his daughter’s romantic relationship. He added that he was very young, and was “about to get married.” However, Connors’ wedding with Evert was called off because of personal issues between them.
