‘She Earned Her Place in History’ – Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova And Others React to the Sudden Passing of Queen Elizabeth II

Today is a sad day for Great Britain and other countries, as Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. The news of her passing affected many sporting communities including the tennis world. After hearing the sad news, many former and current tennis players, including Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Johanna Konta, and others, took to social media and reacted with sadness. 

According to a recent statement made by the social media handle of the Royal Family, the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral.

Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King react to Queen Elizabeth II’s death 

12-time Grand Slam champion, Billie Jean King took to Twitter and wrote, I am saddened to learn of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. For 70 years, her leadership, impact, and influence on the United Kingdom and the entire global community has been immense. I met her in 2010 at Wimbledon, and it was a special moment for me.

“She was the longest reigning British monarch in history, the only woman from the Royal Family to serve in the armed forces, and a respected leader around the world. She earned her place in history, and she will be missed,” she further wrote.

Former British player Johanna Konta wrote, May her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II rest in peace.

18-time Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova tweeted, “How utterly sad- Queens Elizabeth has died- long live the King…”

Meanwhile, Wimbledon’s official Twitter handle tweeted, “We wish to convey our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to The Royal Family on the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen.”

It is worth noting that the Queen has been attending matches at Wimbledon Championships for many years now. Although we did not see her in the last edition, there were many personalities from the Royal family who attended the tournament.
