Serena Williams has always shown rage on the court, be it by calling out a wrong move from the umpire or her competitor. Recently in an exclusive ES fancast, her former coach Rick Macci sided with her fierce attitude and discussed how this makes her stand out.

He discussed how Serena Williams does not need to pretend to be someone else and however she is on court, she is the same way in real life as well and on the inside too. And so, if people don’t like how she was on court, it’s not something she can change as being fierce and rageful on the court is what makes her unique.

In an exclusive ES Fancast interview, Rick Macci was asked to discuss how some players act outrageously on the court because that gets caught by the media and people enjoy it. He said, “It’s a little trickier when it happens from a female. Serena has raged. When she called the line judge, or just the way she is, her monster-tip attitude, was her competitiveness, and she would show it. She is not trying to be something else, that is her. That is how she feels inside. If she tried to be someone else, she might not be that competitive, and see that works for her. She was even that way as a kid. She was always that way. And to me, any coach wants that. Serena would get mad and that made her more determined.  She would scream, and if people don’t like that, she is not here to make buddies.”

Even though there are several instances of Williams getting angry in court, Macci feels that it is how she is on the inside as well. This makes her more competitive and determined and that is what matters. Pleasing others is now what Serena Williams is all about.

Instances of Williams losing her temper on court

In the 2011 US Open, Serena Williams lost her cool over the chair umpire when she was playing against Samantha Stosur. The chair umpire had docked her a point due to deliberate hindrance. At this time, Williams even abused the umpire during the break she got between the game. A similar incident happened in the 2009 US Open semifinal where she was up against Kim Clijsters.
