‘Tearing up Just Listening to This’ – Stan Wawrinka, Carlos Alcaraz, Juan Martin Del Potro, and Other Tennis Stars Pen Emotional Messages as Roger Federer Hangs His Boots

Earlier today, Roger Federer shared a heart-breaking news with his fans as he announced his retirement from professional tennis. According to his statement, the Laver Cup will be the last tournament of his career. 

After hearing the news, many tennis players, including Juan Martin del Potro, Garbine Muguruza, Eugenie Bouchard, Carlos Alcaraz, Andy Roddick, and others, posted heartfelt messages for the Swiss tennis legend.

Tennis world reacts after Roger Federer announced his retirement 

Notably, Federer posted his retirement news on all of his social media platforms, including Instagram and Twitter. Many former and current tennis players took to Twitter and paid homage to the great man.

American tennis star, Jessica Pegula wrote, “Tearing up just listening to this. We love you Roger.”

Former Argentine tennis player, Juan Martin del Potro, who earlier this year retired, commented, “I LOVE YOU, Roger. Thank you for everything you’ve done in tennis and with myself. Tennis world will never be the same without you.”

Federer’s fellow compatriot, Stan Wawrinka, posted a few goat emojis to express his feelings. 

Australian tennis player, Thanasi Kokkinakis used a goat emoji to describe the Swiss legend. 

 

2-time Grand Slam champion, Garbine Muguruza, posted a tweet where she expressed her sadness regarding the retirement news. 

The official Twitter handle of Wimbledon wrote some really nice words for Federer, as they said goodbye to one of the greatest Wimbledon champions of all time. 

Former American tennis player, Andy Roddick, one of Federer’s greatest rivals, wrote on Twitter, “Cheers Roger. Thanks for the shared memories my friend. It was an honor to share time/experiences on the most hallowed grounds in our sport. Don’t be a stranger.”

 

Another former American tennis star, James Blake, said, “Roger, there was and never will be anyone like you. You crushed me on the court, but were so nice and genuine that I couldn’t hate you for it. You made the game better on and off the court and you will be missed. Good luck, you have earned all the success and joy in the world.”

Canadian tennis player and former Wimbledon finalist, Eugenie Bouchard wrote used some crying emojis to express her feelings.  

2022 US Open winner, Carlos Alcaraz, who recently expressed his desire to face Federer in a Grand Slam tournament, also felt heartbroken.

Former India tennis player, Somdev Devvarman tweeted, “Tennis is better because Roger is the greatest.”

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 team posted a heartfelt message on Twitter and called his career ‘game-changing’.

18-time Grand Slam champion, Martina Navratilova took to Twitter and wrote, “What a heartfelt message , full of love, life, hope, passion and gratitude. Which is exactly how Roger played the game we love so much. Thank you thank you thank you, for all the magic!!!”

One of the legends of the game, Rod Laver also posted a tweet, as he wrote, “Thank you for everything Roger. See you soon. Rocket.”

It is worth noting that Roger Federer went through knee surgery last year after Wimbledon and has been trying to recover from it. However, it seems like it is still bothering him, as the Laver Cup will be the last tournament of his career. Moreover, he will most probably miss Basel Indoors, which he won ten times in his career.
