The Western & Southern Open is an iconic Master’s event that is undergoing several changes. With new owners last year, the tournament has seen many developments. The tournament has had 32 directors over time and they recently announced the 33rd director. The new director for the tournament is a familiar face to Novak Djokovic. He is one of his former coaches of the Djoker, Todd Martin.

This development comes in time as the venue of the Cincinnati Masters is still in contention. Beemok Capital, owners of the tournament announced that they will be looking to move the venue of the championships. As funding for the project increases, the likelihood of the shift increases as well.

Former Coach of Novak Djokovic is the new Director of  Western & Southern Open

On June 22, Todd Martin, a former ATP number 4, was announced as the new Western & Southern Open’s Tournament Director. Martin, CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame since 2014, will be the event’s 33rd Tournament Director.

During his induction, Martin said, “As a person who has lived his entire life in the sport of tennis and is a product of the Midwest I am thrilled to have this opportunity at the Western & Southern Open,” Martin further added, “I am energized to be part of a team focused on transforming tennis globally and creating real impact in our community with this sport and through this event.”

Martin’s presence at the Cincinnati Master’s was not that impressive. The former player has a record of 13-10, with the 2000 quarterfinals as his best record. While they revealed their new director, the venue of the tournament is still in contention.

Western & Southern Open now in Charlotte?

While the city of Mason is doing everything in its power to retain the Master’s tournament, Charlotte announced its new bid to move the tournament to their city. The city council of Charlotte held a live stream session in early June on Facebook. The council dedicated a $65 million portion of its funding to the tennis project during the stream.

Although Ohio is doing everything in its power to retain the championship, the new venue is becoming a reality. After relocation by the Charlotte River, the project will have four new tennis stadiums in addition to a structure with an amphitheater for other outdoor activities.
