The French Open is one of the most awaited tournaments in tennis. Played on clay, the championship features some of the best players and facilities. But the status of the tournament doesn’t end there. The tournament invites respected veterans of the sport for broadcasting, and this year is no different. The Roland Garros commentators team will have some of the most celebrated names in the world of tennis. Let’s take a look at a few who might take the mic during this year’s French Open.

Eurosport 

Europeans can tune in to watch the slam live on Eurosport outside of France. The channel will get coverage from former players who have a great history with the French Open. Eurosport has been covering Roland Garros for almost two decades, with HD viewing from 2008. Along with the slam in Paris, Eurosport also covers Wimbledon, the Australian Open, the US Open and several Master’s tournaments. 

Mats Wilander, former Swedish player, attained a career-high of number 2 and won three French Open titles and played in a total of five finals in his prime. Barbara Schett is another member of the commentary team at the Roland Garros. However, her history with the French slam hasn’t been as good as Wilander’s. Her best result at the clay master’s was when she reached the quarterfinal in the doubles four times.

Hours After Rafael Nadal’s Disheartening Roland-Garros Withdrawal, F1 Star Comes Out to Cheer Up the King of Clay

Chris Evert is another member of the team, and certainly the most decorated one. With seven titles, she has won the most French Open titles in the Eurosport coverage team and the most on the WTA Tour. Evert’s rival and friend, Martina Navratilova, will also commentate in Paris. Although Navratilova always gave Evert fierce competition, the Roland Garros was not favorable for the Czech-American. 

Tennis Channel 

The French Open broadcast worldwide will be taken up by the Tennis channel. The platform allows viewers to buy a subscription and watch the matches live from anywhere in the world. While they mostly cover Master’s tournaments, they will add the clay slam to their catalog. The company earned the right to stream the clay major in 2006 after outbidding ESPN. Along with TV, they also stream the sport on their website.

Along with Eurosport, Navratilova will also be lending her time and expert opinion to Tennis Channel. But most of her commentary will be for Eurosport. Jim Courier will join the Czech-American in the box. Courier has enjoyed a sparkling career with four grand slams. Unfortunately, the veteran player couldn’t win the Roland Garros after two finals. 

NBC/Peacock 

In the US, NBC has been covering the French Open ever since television broadcasts became popular. The broadcasting company added the slam to its list of live tournaments in 1975. Besides a three-year stint on CBS, NBC is the top channel covering tennis in the US. Along with televising the match live, they also dabble in tape delay. NBC tapes matches that take place early on the weekend and airs them during the afternoon.

While it broadcasts the finals of the WTA and the ATP live, they delay the airing of the semifinals. Along with TV coverage, Peacock, the streaming service of NBC, will live-stream matches for those who don’t have the channel.

The commentators for the American coverage will be John McEnroe and Mary Carillo. McEnroe is a veteran commentator. He started this venture in 1992, a few months after he retired. However, the Superbrat’s history with French Open has not been a kind one. His best record in Paris has been the final, which he lost against Ivan Lendl.

Carillo is another veteran sportscaster who had a short tennis career. While she never competed in singles tournaments, Carillo won one mixed doubles French Open title with McEnroe in 1977.

Prime Video France 

Along with acquiring the rights to several movies and shows, Amazon’s streaming service, Prime, has also undertaken the task of streaming the French Open. The organization acquired the rights to stream the Roland Garros in 2021. Additionally, they have the exclusive rights to live stream the evening sessions. 

The coverage of Prime will be done by Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, a retired French tennis player. Tsonga has played in the Roland Garros for many seasons, and his best record has been appearing in the semifinal twice. French nationals will be excited to listen to one of their favorites.
