After Navarro’s incredible performance at the Rolland Garros Junior Championship in 2019, her coach, Peter Ayers received a special mention. In an interview after that, Navarro said- “My coach, Peter Ayers, is the most dedicated man I’ve ever met. He’ll do whatever it takes to give me what I need or help me to improve. He’s been a really great mentor for me.”

Now Ayers had a great junior tennis career before he received so much popularity as an American tennis player at Duke University. He also participated in many ATP Future and Challenger Tour tournaments. However, Ayers’s long collaboration with American tennis star Emma Navarro brought him unbelievable fame.

Navarro after her Australian Open’s debut success said– “I don’t know if I could put words to the emotions, but it’s been a lot of years in the making, My coach (Peter Ayers) and I have been together for eight years, I think. From where we started to now, it’s really crazy to think about.”

Emma Navarro’s journey from being Player of the Year at Ashley Hall to bagging victory at the NCAA Singles Championship, and now Australian Open’s performance, Peter Ayers has been her constant guide.

Emma Navarro believes that she ‘belong here’

Navarro started her Australian Open 2024’s journey by facing off against Xiyu Wang from China. She defeated the Chinese tennis star by 6-1,6-7 and 7-5 to enter into the second round. In the second round, Navarro stunned her fans by pulling off an amazing victory against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto. She defeated the Italian tennis player by 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3. After this Emma Navarro directly entered into the tournament’s third round. Here she will challenge Dayana Yastremeska from Ukraine.

Navarro said- “I’m definitely a perfectionist, and so every day on the court I would expect perfection from myself. If I didn’t get it I would think ‘oh well, I’m not good enough, I can’t play with these types of players. So I guess (I have been) just kind of getting over that, and believing that I am good enough and I can play at this level and I belong here, and just having that belief in myself. It’s something I still work on today, so that’s definitely been a mindset shift.”

She further added-  I think as a player I wasn’t ready to, I don’t know, travel halfway across the world to maybe lose first round, My priority at that time was (to) get a bunch of matches in, and I felt like I needed to start at square one and build my game mentally and physically, and my confidence.  “

Emma Navarro’s success tells the stories of a successful collaboration between a player and her coach. The way Navarro always spoke highly of her coach Ayers’s contribution, was truly inspirational.
