With just days left for the Paris Olympic Games, all the eyes are on sporting superstars as they make their final preparations for the mega-event. Meanwhile, in the tennis world, top players have opted to play in the ATP and the WTA tournaments happening this week. However, a few hours ago, the tennis world was jolted with injuries as the likes of Holger Rune, Hubert Hurkacz and Marketa Vondrousova shared upsetting news.

Hurkacz, Rune, and Vondrousova are at the top of their game and were in contention to win a medal for their country in Paris. However, that has been thrown out of question with their latest injury setbacks. While Vondrousova and Hurkacz have pulled out of the Paris Olympics altogether, Rune has withdrawn from this week’s Croatia Open and is highly unlikely to catch the flight to Paris.

Vondrousova, a former Wimbledon champion, took to her official Instagram handle and shared the saddening update with her fans. She revealed, “I hoped until the last moment that it could go at least in a double, but the hand problems do not let me go on the court. I’m concentrating now to be okay at the US Open, I will keep my fingers crossed for all Czech representatives in France from a distance. Hopefully soon on the court.”

Another top star missing from the Paris Olympics Games will be Hubert Hurkacz. The Polish star suffered a brutal knee injury due to which he was forced to withdraw midway from his second-round encounter at Wimbledon against Arthur Fils. As a result, Hurkacz will miss the upcoming Olympics and this will affect Iga Swiatek too as she was slated to play mixed doubles with him. Meanwhile, Swiatek will have to be content with just the singles format, which will be her only chance to win a medal at the Paris Olympics.

Similarly, Rune took to social media to share the news about his injury. The Danish sensation suffered a wrist injury and the tests done on it confirmed that the extent of the injury was serious. Pulling out of the Croatia Open, Rune said, “Now some more exams tomorrow and we will see if conclusion is the same from everyone. Thanks for your support and thank you to the tournament for doing everything you could to help me.”

Interestingly, Rune nearly missed out on the Tokyo Olympics spot when he was just 18 years old. As a result, he was eager to make it to the Paris Olympics this time around.

Holger Rune was as excited as ever to play in the Paris Olympics

The Danish sensation has had a busy schedule of late as he was prepping up for the mega event in Paris. After the Wimbledon Championships, he played at the German Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. Subsequently, he was also due to play in the Croatia Open before his wrist injury played spoilsport. Rune was really looking forward to playing in his maiden Olympics.

During an interview, he said, “I’m looking forward to starting the second clay season of the year, and I’m really excited for the Olympics. The tournament here in Hamburg is also super important in terms of getting ready for that.

The 21-year-old will face a race against time to play in the Paris Olympics. While the likes of Vondrousova, Paula Badosa, Emma Raducanu, Aryna Sabalenka, and Ons Jabeur are already out of the Paris Olympics due to injuries, the sport will potentially lose another star in the form of Rune, whose injury looks serious.
