Australian Open 2019: Day 2 Upsets

Day two of Australian Open 2019 has come to a close and plenty more big names fell by the wayside. While the likes of Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams advanced to the next round, others will be going no further.

As day 2 ends and the opening round of the Grand Slam rolls by, here are some of the biggest upsets of the day.

Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios

The Australian player lost to the returning Milos Raonic during their opening round matchup. Raonic bested Kyrgios in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. As it turned out, Kyrgios made a lot of mistakes and Raonic capitalised. The Canadian will be facing Stan Wawrinka in Round 2.

Mischa Zverev

Mischa Zverev

The older brother of Alexander Zverev, he lost to local player Alexei Popyrin. The score read 7-5, 7-6, 6-4 in the Aussie’s favour. The 19-year old will next face Dominic Thiem in the second round of Australian Open 2019.

Marco Cecchinato

Marco Cecchinato

The Italian world number 17 lost his match to Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic. This one was a 5-set thriller with the final score reading 4-6, 0-6, 6-1, 7-6, 6-4. Now, Krajinovic will be facing Evgeny Donskoy in the second round of the Grand Slam.

Jack Sock

The American player was downed by local favourite Alex Bolt in four sets. The final score read 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in the Australian’s favour. Now, the 26-year old will be squaring off against world number 26, Gilles Simon.

Sam Querrey

This was another 4-set match that did not go in Querrey’s favour. He lost to Pierre Hugues Herbert with a score of 5-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-1. Now, the Frenchman will go up against Korean sensation Hyeon Chung in Round 2.

Dominika Cibulkova

Moving to the women’s draw, world number 26, Dominika Cibulkova was the first female casualty. She lost to China’s Shuai Zhang in three sets. The score read, 6-2, 406, 6-2 in Zhang’s favour. The 29-year old Chinese player will next face Krystina Pliskova in the second round.

Sam Stosur

This was a real shame for the home crowd as Sam Stosur slumped to a defeat in the first round. Her opponent was Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska who won 7-5, 6-2. Yastremska will be facing Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro in the next round.

Victoria Azarenka

Victoria Azarenka

This was by far the saddest exit of the day as Azarenka fought bravely till the end. Sadly, she lost to Germany’s Laura Siegemund. The final score read 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in Siegemund’s favour. Now, the German will have to face Su-wei Hsieh, hailing from Taiwan, in the next round of Australian Open 2019.

Daria Kasatkina

Daria Kasatkina

Rounding out the upsets of the day is Russia’s Daria Kasatkina. The 21-year old was felled by Switzerland’s Timea Baczinsky with a score of 6-3, 6-0. Now, Baczinsky will go up against Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva in the next round.
