Indiana’s quarterback room, soon to be vacated by a Heisman winner, has become the new battleground in the transfer portal wars. Sam Leavitt is one such name who became a top prospect after announcing his decision to transfer. But now, Josh Hoover is here to spoil his party by becoming the next big name in the transfer portal. The TCU QB already has a connection with Indiana, which is the most attractive space for portal prospects.

Hoover, with his 9,629 yards and 71 TDs, is easily one of the top QBs available in the portal. It’s a massive blow to TCU fans, who saw him as a loyal leader for the past 3-ish years. However, the talent needs to be leveraged at a higher level. The 21-year-old knows he’s got a chance to land a lucrative opportunity, having the 7th highest yardage in the country this season.
According to On3, his former recruiting suitor, Indiana, might be interested in him. Curt Cignetti’s team is an “early school to watch” for Josh Hoover’s portal adventure.

Indiana ended up being on Josh Hoover’s top 2 when he was being recruited out of high school. Hoover was actually committed to Indiana as a high school prospect in the class of 2022 before flipping to TCU late in the cycle. SMU was the projected winner for him because of the strong bond he built with HC Sonny Dykes. Dykes came to TCU, and Hoover followed suit. But after 4 years, the QB’s next best fit seems to be in the QB powerhouse that Curt Cignetti is building at Indiana.
“I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to represent TCU for an incredible 4 years,” Hoover wrote in a statement on social media. “It has been a dream to be able to play and graduate from this university and I will forever be grateful for that. I’ve prayed about this and decided that I will be entering the transfer portal.”

The Indiana that recruited him then is not the Indiana that is now on its second consecutive playoff run. Cignetti’s prowess with QBs makes Bloomington a great spot for Josh Hoover. Indiana has seen success with transfer portal QBs in both Kurtis Rourke and Fernando Mendoza. Hoover can very well continue the trend. Hoover’s expertise would be a valuable asset for Cignetti, who is clearly committed to establishing Indiana as a national powerhouse.
Of course, Josh Hoover will only get in if Mendoza makes way by declaring for the draft. This is the best time for him to do so, since he’s bagged the Heisman and is on an unbeaten record this year. Plus, Hoover is not the only high-profile name in the portal. DJ Lagway and Dylan Raiola are also in the mix, presenting the same potential to Curt Cignetti. And he’ll have to beat out fellow Big 12 QB Sam Leavitt.

Here’s another program the Arizona State star could look at.
Sam Leavitt can be a Hurricane next year
Sam Leavitt being less experienced than Josh Hoover complicates things a little bit. The TCU QB can call it a day by spending his only remaining year of eligibility at Bloomington. That’s also something that Cignetti might prefer. Leavitt, however, remains a top prospect, and title-contending teams will still be interested in him. One of them could be Miami, since it is also rumored to be interested in the QB as a replacement for Carson Beck.

Mario Cristobal is a genius in the transfer portal, especially at quarterbacks. Sure, Carson Beck is no Fernando Mendoza. But the growth he’s had at Coral Gables is a taste of the system that Leavitt can be part of. At Miami, the QB will get to experience a young but established group of receivers. Plus, he can also bolster the rushing attack, which has been led by Mark Fletcher Jr. this season. Cristobal can pursue top talents to pick Miami, which is also something the ASU QB could be interested in.
Both Miami and Indiana are on great momentum, which will definitely help Sam Leavitt’s career. But with Josh Hoover threatening to steal away his opportunities, the Hurricanes have now become an extremely promising avenue for the Sun Devils hero.
