Reports in Spain have mentioned of Barcelona’s keen interest in appointing Mauricio Pochettino as the head coach. The Catalan hierarchy believes the former Tottenham manager is an ideal candidate when it comes to the tactical ability. And this comes as no shock, as Pochettino is known for the attacking and expansive form of football that he played at Tottenham. And given that he succeeded in doing so with a tight budget and limited resources only improves his case. Barcelona’s interest can be measured by the fact that their President has reportedly already approved his appointment.

Mauricio Pochettino’s links with Espanyol seen as a potential issue

Though the biggest issues in appointing the Argentine is his former association with this Barcelona’s rival, Espanyol. The former Southampton Manager has already made more than 250 for Espanyol. He also managed them for three years between 2009 and 2012. During which he also provided Espanyol with their first win over Barcelona in 27 years. Pochettino’s men won the match 2-1 against a formidable Barcelona team in their own turf at Camp Nou. He has also made comments claiming that he would never manage the La Liga giants ever given their rivalry.

All these facts have made the Barcelona hierarchy sceptic of appointing him. As they believe that he won’t be accepted by the fans. And their fears aren’t unreasonable but maybe a little overcautious. Modern football has given enough examples of former rivals coming together to achieve greater feats. All that the Barcelona fans would demand from Mauricio Pochettino would be his loyalty. And Pochettino can be counted on that one given his long spell at Tottenham Hotspurs.
