Whenever there are discussions about who the best forwards or centers of the 2000s, names like Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan are a constant. But one name that arguably flies under the radar is that of Pau Gasol.

Pau who played for the Memphis Grizzlies to start off his career in the NBA, was unlike any other European superstar. With a gritty and physical play in defense combined with finesse in the offensive end, Gasol looked like the complete package.

But arguably his most iconic and memorable seasons were with the Los Angeles Lakers. Playing alongside Kobe Bryant, Gasol immediately proved to be an incredible addition to the roster. Making it to the Finals in the very first season, big things were on the cards for the Spaniard and Kobe.

In the next two seasons, Gasol was the fellow All-Star Bryant needed, as the duo led the Lakers to two successive championships. Apart from his time in the Lakers, the 6-time All-Star did have a great time with the Bulls and the Spurs as he was a meaningful contributor on the court despite his age.

FC Barcelona pay a special tribute to Pau Gasol

The Spaniard yesterday sent shock waves to the basketball community as he announced his retirement from the sport. While NBA players and fans congratulated the Spaniard for an amazing career, European giants FC Barcelona had a unique way to celebrate Gasol’s legacy.

In their recent game against Zaragoza, Barcelona stopped the game at the 16th minute. With the crowd on their feet and the club playing a special montage, everyone gave Pau Gasol a round of applause for an incredible career.

While Gasol is certainly an NBA legend with multiple championships and All-Star accolades to his name, he started off as a phenom back in Spain. Starting off his career in the Liga ACB, Pau played for one of the most prestigious European teams in FC Barcelona.

Starting off his career in 1998-99 season, the 7’0″ center/forward had a slow start to his year. But the Spaniard stepped up in the next two seasons and even won two league titles with the team. Gasol even returned to the team for one last ride last season.
