2021-22 season was Simmons’ first year in the playoffs where he struggled at the free-throw line and ranked the worst free-throw shooter in the league’s history. Shaquille O’Neal (37.4%) and Wilt Chamberlain (38%) were the only other players to attempt at least 67 shots (34.2%).

Simmons suffered a Game 7 loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference semifinals after he had difficulty shooting and was unaggressive offensively. In five of the seven games, Simmons attempted no shots in the final quarter. They blamed this on his lack of confidence in taking free throws.
