Dennis Schroder signed with Boston Celtics during the 2021 off-season on a one-year deal. However, there were rumors that Schroder got a better offer from the Lakers, but he rejected it. Former NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley have recently expressed their thoughts on Schroder’s decision to turn down the Lakers contract.

Oklahoma City Thunder traded Schroder to the Lakers in November 2020. The German guard wasn’t a regular starter in Oklahoma but got the starting spot at the Lakers. He featured in 61 games last season, starting in all of them. As Schroder settled in well and had a significant contribution last season, the Lakers reportedly offered him a 4-year deal. The new deal was supposedly worth $84 million.

However, according to several rumors during the off-season, Schroder rejected the deal. As time passed, Schroder had to eventually sign with the Celtics for just around $6 million. Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley recently talked about Schroder and him turning down a huge contract.

“I don’t care if it’s his mom, his dad, his brother, he’s gotta fire his agent. If you turn down $84 million against $6 [million], uh…,” Barkley said.

Schroder had revealed that he wanted to stay with the Lakers after 2020-21. However, he had to settle with a one-year deal with the Celtics during the off-season. If the reports are to be true, that is a huge downgrade for Schroder.

However, the German guard has denied those rumors and has stated that he was never offered that contract from the Lakers. Moreover, he can still show that he is worthy of such a contract with the Celtics and can get an improved extension next season.
