If you feel sad for Gael Monfils, you are most certainly not the only one. The talented French star has competed with all his heart and effort for the entirety of his career. However, he has never reached past the semi-final at a grand slam.

The reasons are pretty obvious. He is born in a generation that has the mighty Big 3. When they wouldn’t win, there was Andy Murray and a once-powerful Stan Wawrinka to claim the titles. This, despite being a supremely talented player, Monfils has to contend with ten ATP World Tour titles.

As he approaches the end of his career, the path to a grand slam title looks even murkier. A closer aim would be a berth in the top 5 of the ATP world rankings before he retires. He is currently at number 9 and 2020 has been an amazing year for him. In fact, he has already won two titles and narrowly lost out to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. A confident Monfils is still hopeful about a grand slam title and top 5 finish before he retires.
