Belinda Bencic Advances To Fourth Round of US Open 2019 as Anett Kontaveit Withdraws

World Number 14, Anett Kontaveit has withdrawn from her third-round match at US Open 2019. The Estonian, Kontaveit withdrew due to an illness and has never been beyond the fourth round of Grand Slam. She had set up a match against Belinda Bencic, but now, the Swiss player as she gets a walkover.

Bencic has advanced into the fourth round of US Open 2019 and over there she will meet the World Number one, Naomi Osaka or the teenage phenom of tennis, Coco Gauff.

This year, Belinda Bencic was seeded 23rd at the Indian Wells tournament and over there, she dethroned the top-seed and the defending champion, Naomi Osaka in the pre-quarterfinals.

During that match, Bencic allowed the Japanese to win only four games. Later, she was knocked out in the semifinals. In their next meeting in Madrid, Bencic again defeated the top-seed, Naomi Osaka, but this time it was in three sets.

In the year 2014 (which is two years after she turned professional), Belinda Bencic achieved her best-ever run at the Grand Slam tournaments. She cruised into the US Open quarterfinals after defeating top-ten players, Angelique Kerber and Jelena Jankovic. At that age of 17, she was the youngest quarterfinalist at the US Open, since her compatriot, Martina Hingis in 1997.

At US Open 2019, Belinda Bencic won matches against Mandy Minella and Alize Cornet. However, before coming to New York, during the Cincinnati Open 2019, she retired from her first-round match against Victoria Azarenka due to an injury.

The Saturday night showdown between Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka is one of the pop-corn matches in the women’s draw. Transatlantic ‘Coco Mania’ from Wimbledon to New York has resonated the Flushing Meadows as Coco plays the top-seed and the defending champion of US Open 2019.
