The UFC has been trying to find its way back to normalcy amid one of the biggest epidemics the world has seen in quite some time. This has resulted in a number of people blasting the UFC for their incessant attempts to organize UFC 249. Among these is Bellator’s CEO, Scott Coker.

Throughout these trying times, Coker has been a strong advocate of practicing caution. This is why the Bellator set an example for every sporting organization in the world by canceling all its events. Including paying its fighters their show and win money.

“That’s pretty ambitious. I don’t know what’s their protocol. That’s the one thing I would say: Let’s all be sensible”- Scott Coker to MMA Junkie

The Bellator, unlike the UFC, is not in such a hurry to start organizing events. They are hoping to plan fights July onwards, considering the threat from the virus goes down significantly. Coker feels the UFC should follow the Bellator model to ensure absolute safety and avoid hasty moves in such tumultuous times.

“If you don’t figure it out and you don’t have all the answers, there could be something bad that happens. And then everybody is backtracking, everybody is going to be in a defensive position, and it’s going to affect everybody. Not just them, but us as well.”- Scott Coker

The UFC has already faced failure while trying to try to make UFC 249 a reality on April 18th. However, 10 days ahead of the event Disney and ESPN intervened to pull the plug on the event, per Governor Gavin Newsom’s advice.

“We Didn’t Feel This Was the Right Time”- ESPN on UFC 249 Cancellation

“If it was a situation where the communication was – if I was talking to (UFC vice president of regulatory affairs) Marc Ratner, I would just say, ‘Hey, Marc. Be careful, man, because this is a very serious situation. Make sure everything gets done properly because we don’t want to have something bad happen in this sport’.”- Scott Coker
