Colby Covington, in his recent rants, has added another statement that caused some discussion. Covington has gone out and said that belts and titles don’t hold as much value as they used to back in the day.

Colby Covington has recently been running his mouth all over. From calling people out to his falling out with American Top Team, the man is all over the place. Now, he has gone out and said that the championship belts have lost most of their significance.

But he backs his statement up. He is of the opinion that title fights aren’t the only fights capable of drawing in huge numbers. He says even fights that don’t include a title up for grabs are able to do equally well, and sometimes, even better.

Covington said that Jon Jones’ recent decision to move up to heavyweight is one such example. Title or no title, if Jones is matched up opposite Francis Ngannou, the world is going to watch. He even spoke of Israel Adesanya’s inclination towards taking on Jon Jones. That fight too will see huge numbers, irrespective of whether it is a title fight.

Colby Covington speaks up

“Let’s be honest guys, belts don’t mean anything anymore,” Covington said on the latest episode of Submission Radio. “The belts mean nothing. I mean, the biggest fights that can be made, they’re not with belts anymore. Those aren’t the big fights. Look at me and Jorge Masvidal. There’s no belt. There’s just a real beef, and that’s the biggest fight that can be made. And for Jon, bigger fights are at heavyweight or maybe with Adesanya. That could be his biggest fight. So, there’s really no belts that are needed anymore these days for negotiating and for showing your worth and your drawing power. So, the belt has no relevance to negotiations.”

Covington is now looking out for his next match. His last outing was in December, where he took on Kamaru Usman and lost. He now has in front of him 3 choices. A rematch against Usman, a fight against a friend turned enemy Jorge Masvidal or former gym partner Dustin Poirier.
