England all-rounder Ben Stokes said that he would give up all the personal accolades that he earned in 2019 for his father’s good health.

Ben’s father, Ged Stokes, has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the last few weeks. Stokes missed the training session before England’s first test match against South Africa.

“Ben Stokes’s father, Ged, was admitted to hospital on Monday in Johannesburg after suffering a serious illness. He remains in a critical condition,” the ECB had said in a media release.

“The all-rounder will not be at England’s training session at SuperSport Park this afternoon so that he can be at his father’s bedside.

“The England and Wales Cricket Board, with the support of Ben and his family, request that the media and public respect Ben and his family’s privacy at this time.”

However, signs of Stokes’ father recovering meant that the Stokes would play the test match in Johannesburg.

Ged Stokes still remains in hospital and vice-captain Stokes said that he would be giving up anything for his father’s wellbeing. In his column for Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper published on Tuesday, Stokes said that all his winnings in the year where he won the BBC’s sports personality of the year, Stokes wrote that he was ready to give away everything that he won in the summer for his father’s health.

Players suffering illness in the tour

Meanwhile, England’s ongoing tour to South Africa is not going well with a number of players falling ill. Stokes said that the tour was named as a “cursed tour” after as many as 11 players fell ill, although he also said that it would by no means be an excuse for their loss.

After South Africa managed to win the first test match, the second test of the four-match series will begin from January 4th.
