Bianca Andreescu Announces Sad News Ahead of Australian Open 2020

The US Open 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu withdraws from the Australian Open 2020 due to a knee problem. Despite a good rehabilitation process, the rising tennis star could not make it to the first major of the season. Why?
Andreescu sustained the knee injury at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen in October last year. The injury also forced her to retire in her match against Karolina Pliskova and thus withdraw from the year-end championship.

“Australian Open is too soon for my rehab process”: Bianca Andreescu
In a statement on Saturday, the Canadian explained that she has not made enough progress in her rehabilitation. She revealed that the knee issue is still troubling her enough to prevent her from featuring in the first major tournament of the year.

“Hey guys, just wanted to give you a little update on my knee rehab after I got injured at the WTA finals in Shenzhen,” Andreescu wrote on Twitter.

She further added: “My rehab is going well. I feel better and stronger every day but after discussing it with my team and following the recommendation of the doctors, the Australian Open is unfortunately too soon in my rehab process. I sadly will not be able to play in it this year.”
The 19-year-old also suggested that it was a very tough decision to make as she loves to play in Melbourne. However, she has to respect the recuperation plan for her knee and body. The Canadian concluded, “I can’t wait to come back to Aus soon.”

Andreescu’s breakthrough 2019 season
Last year, Bianca entered the Australian Open as a qualifier. She reached the second round in Melbourne before losing to Anastasija Sevastova.
The teenager then enjoyed a breakout season, climbing up the WTA rankings to become the World No.4. She also lifted her first three trophies on the professional tour, including her maiden Grand Slam title in New York.

Andreescu stunned the 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in straight sets at the US Open 2019 finals. Though she was forced to pull out of the Shiseido WTA Finals Shenzhen because of a left knee injury, Bianca completed a stellar year.
