Bianca Andreescu the 2019 US Open champion has struggled to keep fit since her first Major. The Canadian also missed out on the 2020 Australian Open with a knee injury. She was scheduled to play in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships starting next week, but her knee has yet to recover.

Andreescu has pulled out of the Dubai event, but might still play in the Qatar Ladies Open in Doha a week later.

Andreescu announced herself to the tennis world when she beat Serena Williams to win the 2020 US Open. Her emphatic win over Williams meant she became the first teenager to win a Grand Slam since Maria Sharapova in 2006. She is also the first Canadian to win a tennis Major.

Bianca Andreescu hampered by knee injury

The knee problems started for Andreescu in last year’s WTA Tour Finals, forcing her to pull out half way through. Unfortunately for the Canadian, she has yet to completely recover since.

After dropping out of the Australian Open, she was hopeful of playing in the Fed Cup. Alas, her knee did not allow her to compete.

“I have to respect the recuperation plan for my knee and body,” Andreescu wrote on Twitter. “I feel better and stronger every day but the Australian Open is unfortunately too soon in my rehab process.”

Difficult times for the Canadian, especially getting injured right as she was in the best for of her life.

She reached a career-high ranking of No. 4 in October, thanks to her Flushing Meadows success. She still remains in the top 10, having dropped just two spots to No. 6 in the world now.

Bianca will be hopeful of getting fit in time to defend her title at the Indian Wells Masters, which begins next month on March 9. But her sole focus will surely be on doing all she can to make sure her knee is as good as new.

The Dubai tennis Championship may have lost out on a mercurial young talent, but it still boasts of some huge names. Along with players like Simona Halep, Sofia Kenin, Karoline Pliskova, the event will also feature Kim Clijsters who is making her long awaited comeback.
