In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Bumstead offered a candid look into the struggles he’s been facing this year. This year has proved especially challenging for Bumstead. “Stress Rush mode which is something that I’ve been stuck in a lot this year and it really held me back”. He admits to often finding himself trapped in this hurried state of mind, a relentless cycle that he believes impacted various facets of his life. His wife, Courtney Alexis, suggested a potential solution in the form of a book titled “The One Thing.” Although Bumstead hasn’t dived into its pages yet, he feels it echoes advice from his therapist: striving to be the best might come at the cost of other aspects of one’s life.

The pursuit of excellence, while commendable, can sometimes overshadow other equally important areas. Relationships, business, mental well-being–the pursuit of perfection often demands sacrifices. For Bumstead, this pursuit took a toll on his mental peace.

However, the video wasn’t just about problems; it was also about solutions. Bumstead talked about a specific coping mechanism he’s developed. During heightened moments of stress, he feels his perspective narrowing, much like tunnel vision. “I’m looking through a tunnel like this and I’ve noticed something that helps me get out of that is physically opening up my sight of view and like slowing down, taking a breath looking around me.” This recognition of one’s mental state and the attempt to recalibrate it leads us to consider the broader aspects of an athlete’s life.
