In 1979, the bodybuilding world was abuzz with excitement as the Mr. Olympia competition was about to start. Frank Zane, already a two-time Mr. Olympia, was a symbol of aesthetic perfection and symmetry with his ripped physique earning him immense respect among the athletes as well as the fans. On the other hand, Robbie Robinson was also a formidable competitor known for his incredible mass and powerful presence on stage.

Decades later, in an interesting podcast with Olympia TV, Zane talks about the legendary face-off, taking the viewers back in time to the moment when two legendary bodybuilders locked horns in a battle that would be forever remembered in the history of bodybuilding.

The most intriguing aspect of the face-off was the striking difference in their physiques. Zane was the epitome of aesthetics, boasting a symmetrical and well-proportioned physique. On the other hand, Robinson presented a different style of bodybuilding, focusing on sheer muscle mass and impressive size. His presence often left the audience in awe due to his size.

Talking about his competition, Zane stated during the podcast, “The guy I thought was really good was Robbie Robinson, who had a great physique. So I had some competition with Robbie…I managed to pull through those three years.”

Talking about the 1980s, Mr. Olympia, Zane stated, “I had a bad accident beforehand in order to win the show. And there’s a lot of controversy about that.” But what was the bad accident that Zane is referring to? Let’s take a look. 

Zane opens up about the horrific accident

A few months back, during an interview with Lisa Alastuey, a professor in the Health Science department at the University of Houston, Frank recalled the horrific incident. The incident took place in Zane’s house in Palm Springs. “One day I jumped in the pool. I hit the lip of the pool in my urethra, smashed my urethra, and his blood gushing out of my penis,” revealed Zane.

Further, Zane stated, “I went to the hospital and I ended up competing anyway, you know. But I wasn’t at my very best. I was very muscular. I lost about 15 pounds of muscle and I didn’t win.”
