Borna Coric on Split With Coach – “Maria Sharapova Was One of The Main Reasons”

The Croatian, Borna Coric reflected upon his training annulment With his coach, Riccardo Piatti and mentioned that Piatti’s collaboration with Maria Sharapova created differences in their relationship.

“We can say that it certainly did not help to resolve the differences and made the situation worse,” Borna Coric referred Piatti’s alliance with Maria Sharapova. “This was one of the main reasons. He is following several projects and could no longer focus fully on me. Given this and the previous divergences, we assessed that the separation was the best option.” Coric added.

World Number 15, Coric withdrew from the second-round US Open 2019 in New York due to a low back strain, and soon after that, he split with his coach, Riccardo Piatti. Under Piatti’s guidance, the Croatian has attained some milestones in his career.

In 2017, Borna Coric won his first ATP title in Marrakesh, Morocco. He had an impressive run on the ATP in 2018. That year, Coric dethroned the defending champion at Halle Open 2018 finals with a win over then World Number one, Roger Federer. He also ended Federer’s 20-match winning streak on grass. Since then, Coric hasn’t won a title.

“There have been differences for some time, since the beginning of the year. They reached the pinnacle at the US Open, after which we all sat around a table and decided to interrupt the collaboration,” Coric added.

After Sharapova split with her coach, Thomas Hogstedt at the beginning of US Open series this year and before stepping into North America, the Russian trained with Riccardo Piatti at his tennis academy in Bordighera, Italy.

Likewise, while coaching Sharapova in Italy, Piatti was delighted with her work ethic and her desire to play tennis on the summit. “I found her really motivated and very careful. She wants to come back to the top, and she needs to find her tennis again after being stopped several times. She is so strong mentally that if she can keep being healthy, I am sure she will be able to return to the top. Working with her was an honor,” Piatti said.
