British heavyweight professional boxer Tyson Fury recently received the ABC’S ESPY award for ‘Boxer of the Year’. The WBC Heavy title holder missed out on the red carpet outing to receive this award as he tested positive for Covid-19. Fury shared that missing such an event was one minor inconvenience of being in quarantine.

‘The Gypsy King’ expressed displeasure over receiving awards elsewhere but not being given enough recognition in his own country. While Anthony Joshua has been honored with an OBE, none of Tyson Fury‘s accomplishments and efforts have been acknowledged in the Queen’s Honor list.

Frustrated with other athletes being recognized for their achievements, Tyson Fury took shots at British F1 driver Lewis Hamilton. The heavyweight referred to his taxation-related mix-ups in the past. Fury implied that he pays his taxes in full and compared it with Hamilton’s tax evasion rumors.

Unlike Lewis Hamilton, I live and pay taxes which went up to £9million last year, said Tyson Fury.

Is Tyson Fury right about Lewis Hamilton?

It is a common belief that most F1 drivers live in Monaco solely because of tax exemption incentives. It is rumored that Lewis Hamilton contributes nothing to the country in taxes. Such claims and rumors about the F1 driver went up a notch in 2020 when the Paradise papers enlisted Hamilton as well.

However, this is inaccurate, as a 2019 report enlisted Lewis Hamilton among the top 5000 taxpayers in the UK. This implies that Tyson Fury’s claim about the F1 driver may be inaccurate.

Many have also accused Hamilton of not paying enough taxes even when he earns millions. Lewis Hamilton, who has dismissed all such claims in the past, addressed the misconceptions in 2014 in an interview.

The F1 star highlighted that he pays “a lot” in taxes in his home country. He added that he also has to contribute to other countries that he works and earns out of.

What people don’t realise is that I pay tax here [in the UK], but I don’t earn all my money here. I race in 19 different countries, so I earn my money in 20 different places and I pay tax in several different places, and I pay a lot here as well. I am contributing to the country and, not only that, I help keep a team of more than 1,000 people employed, said Hamilton to The Times.
