YouTube boxer Jake Paul continues to create hype through his unusual boxing matches. Whether he is fighting some UFC guy or the son of one of the most respected legends in boxing, seemingly everyone wants to watch the action unfold. His latest fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is no different, but has he managed to build a legacy in the sport worth remembering? 

Days before Paul and Chavez Jr. met for their first press conference at Avalon Hollywood Theater in Los Angeles, California, Chavez Jr.’s legendary father, Julio Cesar Chavez, shared his take on Paul’s career. Chavez Sr. didn’t pull any punches, as he held up a mirror for ‘The Problem Child’ to look into before the June 28th fight at Honda Center, Anaheim. 

While appearing in an interview with Fight Hub TV during the Canelo vs. Scull fight in Riyadh, Chavez Sr. started by expressing his excitement for his son’s fight, stating, “Thrilled, honestly! It’s a great opportunity for my son.” It’s worth noting that Chavez Jr. had not fought in three years before defeating Uriah Hall in July last year on the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson.

Chavez Jr. even lost a boxing match to former UFC champion Anderson Silva, someone Paul had defeated in a boxing match previously. Despite that, Chavez Sr. seemed confident in his son’s capability, stating, “And we are gonna beat Jake Paul.” When pressed about his thoughts on Paul’s career thus far, he didn’t seem too impressed.

“Well, he is a YouTuber who’s been gaining experience,” Chavez Sr. claimed. “As a boxer, I think he doesn’t know much boxing, but he’s strong and learning.” This comes after Paul attempted to secure fights against Canelo Alvarez and Gervonta Davis, both of which fell apart pretty quickly for one reason or the other.

Despite Chavez Sr.’s criticism of his boxing skills, ‘El Gallo’ doesn’t seem to have given up on the idea of becoming a world champion.

Jake Paul believes his June 28 clash with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is the final hurdle before a world title shot. “This is just a stepping stone. I see him as a speed bump,” Paul declared at the press conference. The YouTuber-turned-boxer is confident that a dominant win over Chavez Jr., a former middleweight champion, will solidify his case for a championship bout. 

“I know I’m the greatest. I know I’m a champion even before I arrive [at] that level,” he said. Paul is eyeing a future showdown with the current WBO cruiserweight champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, who is co-headlining the Anaheim card against former IBF cruiserweight champion Yuniel Dorticos. “Ramirez can get it whenever,” Paul warned. 

That said, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. doesn’t think Jake Paul has much boxing skill, but his son lost to the guy whom Paul has already defeated—Anderson Silva.
