After his stunning defeat to Gervonta Davis in their highly anticipated bout, Ryan Garcia has announced that he will not be seeking a rematch with Davis below 140 pounds. The announcement came after Davis secured a dominating victory over the now 23-1 boxer. Davis landed a liver shot that sent Garcia to the floor from which he was unable to recover. This led to the referee stepping in and stopping the bout in the seventh round

Now that ‘KingRy’ has lost to ‘Tank’, he expressed interest in a rematch. His latest comments may suggest that he may be looking to move up in weight class. Garcia already had to cut a lot of weight to make 136 pounds for this fight and the fight was only made harder by the rehydration clause in the contract.

Ryan Garcia does not want to fight Gervonta Davis below 140 pounds

In a recent Instagram story following his defeat, Garcia had a message for his fans. He stated that he was disappointed in the result after trying his best. Moreover, he claimed he would be interested in a rematch with the WBA (regular) lightweight champ but would prefer to do it at 140 or 147 pounds.

Hey guys, obviously I’m disappointed after the fight. Tried my best, he caught me a good body shot. Come back stronger and, yeah man, hopefully one day, to rack up a couple wins, we could do a rematch, maybe 140 or 147. But thank you guys for all the support. Love you guys. Peace,” he said.

While he may not be seeking a rematch with Davis below 140 pounds, there are plenty of other exciting matchups on the horizon for him.

Garcia intends to move up following his loss

The 24-year-old boxer is now setting his sights on moving up a weight class after his loss. Even if a rematch with Davis does not plan out, it seems that Garcia is ready to move up to super-lightweight. “I feel much stronger at 140lbs. I’m gonna go up and fight the top fighters at 140lbs, that’s what I plan to do,” he said in the post-fight press conference.

The decision to move up in weight may be a wise one for Garcia. The current lightweight division is one of the most stacked divisions with the likes of Devin Haney, Vasyl Lomachenko, and Teofimo Lopez.
