Ryan Garcia is undeniably one of the biggest draws in boxing right now. He has a massive following and appeared in one of last year’s biggest fights. So, hands down, Rolly Romero would have made more money fighting Garcia than Isaac Cruz. However, that’s not the case. At least, that’s what Romero seems to think.

Long before Garcia finalized his fight against Devin Haney, the Victorville native was supposed to fight Romero. However, for whatever reason, Romero decided to ditch Garcia for Cruz. So, when Fight Hub TV brought up the ‘more money with Garcia’ angle today, the WBA super lightweight champion said this during the interview.

While discussing Romero’s move to fight ‘Pitbull’ instead of Garcia, the reporter questioned whether there were further talks with Golden Boy Promotions after choosing Cruz. “The Second I said I was fighting ‘Pitbull,’ I got calls from everybody at Golden Boy, begging me to fight them,” Romero responded. He also suggested during the Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis fight, promoted by Oscar De La Hoya and Al Haymon, Garcia made a lot of money. However, after that fight, he took a massive pay cut.

So, Rolly Romero believes, “Al Haymon’s where all the money is at. Why am I going to go fight on a s**t platform [DZAN] when I could grow Amazon Prime? That’s already the biggest platform in boxing history.” Later in the interview, when probed about Golden Boy or Garcia claiming a fight with them would have been bigger than Cruz – Romero cleared the air. “Al Haymon gave me a better deal. Al Haymon takes care of his fighters,” said Romero. Money aside, the Las Vegas resident had another reason for choosing Cruz.

Is Isaac Cruz miles above Ryan Garcia?

Speaking to Fight Hype in an interview on 27 January, Romero justified his choice to fight Cruz instead of Garcia. Even though Garica is a bigger name and is a solid 140-pounder, Romero thinks he made the harder choice. He stated, “Isn’t Pitbull Cruz a more difficult fighter? A stronger fighter? A more durable fighter? A more exciting fighter?”

Whether Cruz is better than Garcia is unclear, but interestingly, Gervonta Davis took down all three of these fighters at one point or another. However, a case could be made that Cruz went the distance with Davis. So, Rolly Romeor suggested, “It just shows that I have balls for going after Pitbull Cruz.”

One take at a time

The first time boxing captured my attention, it was because of a line I heard in the film 'Rocky Balboa', a film surrounding boxing. The line went like this, "But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
