In a new signing, Matchroom Boxing and promoter Eddie Hearn have welcomed undefeated Chinese heavyweight boxer, Zhang Zhilei, to the family.
The unbeaten Chinese boxer seems hell-bent on knocking the unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua off his throne. Now, after being signed by the same promotion, Zhilei can continue his journey to the top.
“I’m very happy to agree with Matchroom,” said Zhang. “They are one of the best promoters in the world. I’m the best Heavyweight coming out of China. I need an opportunity to become the best in the world, which I firmly believe Matchroom can provide. With each of us focused on our part, I wish a happy and prosperous future together.”
Zhilei (22-0, 16 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision win over Andriy Rudenko in a ten-round contest. He will most likely be having his next bout in November this year.
Now, Anthony Joshua (23-1, 21 KOs) sits at the top of the chain with the elite heavyweights. He will be facing the IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev by the end of this year.
Interestingly enough, the two heavyweight boxers have met before in London Olympics, where Joshua beat Zhilei 15-11 in the quarter-finals. Ever since that loss, Zhilei has been eyeing revenge.
This recent addition has brought even more excitement in the heavyweight division. With a handful of boxers sitting at the top, there many talented contenders waiting for their chance to take over. And though Zhilei has a long way to go, it will be interesting to see how he performs against the best in the world.
Beating the unified heavyweight champion is no easy feat, but his performance against the top contenders on his way to the title will give us a hint of things to come for sure.
