Ryan Garcia‘s career may seem bleak, but even Devin Haney has suffered a lot after the entire ordeal. And now, in a surprising turn of events, Teofimo Lopez has shown empathy towards the boxer. ‘The Dream’ Haney lost the biggest fight of his career back in April, as ‘King Ry’ Garcia dominated the twelve rounds fight.

While Haney managed to get his zero back after the ruling from the New York State Athletics Commission because of Garcia’s multiple positive PED tests, the former WBC super lightweight champion didn’t come out of the situation unscathed. After being brutalized by Garcia, the Haney stocks seem to have crashed and he ain’t getting good fights. So, here’s what Lopez had to say about Haney!

Teofimo Lopez refuses to fight Devin Haney

‘The Takeover’ was at Anaheim, California, on July 6th to watch the Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal boxing match when a bunch of reporters caught up with him to get his statements on a variety of subjects. Suddenly, one of the reporters asked whether he was open to fighting Devin Haney, highlighting Lopez is most likely to win.

You would think Lopez would answer by agreeing, and boasting about his superiority. But that, surprisingly, wasn’t the case! Instead, Lopez chose a more pathetic approach—he said, “Hey, shoot! I just say it like this man. Haney is just going through his thing man, so I can’t really…”

However, there could also be another reason behind Lopez’s refusal to potentially fight Haney. See, the thing is, after the Garcia loss he was supposed to face Sandor Martin as his WBC mandatory, but because Top Rank, who secured the rights to hosting the fight made an extremely low purse offer to Haney for the fight, ‘The Dream’ relinquished the belt.

So, Lopez stands to gain nothing by fighting Haney, and not to mention, Haney won’t fight Lopez for a low purse. In the meantime, Devin Haney seems hellbent on exacting revenge on the Victorville native.

Devin Haney promises to make Ryan Garcia pay

After Garcia’s PED situation came to light, Haney didn’t really think about having a rematch against Garcia. However, he had changed his mind, something he revealed during an interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour a while back. “He going to pay in the ring and out the ring and that I mean in many different ways”, Haney said.

Haney seemed focused on getting his lost image as one of the best back by beating Garcia when he gets back from his one year long sentence out of the ring. “The sh*t that he did, I want to make him pay for the sh*t that he did”, Haney added. Ryan Garcia’s ban will end on 20th April 2025, so a fight after that is possible, but per Garcia’s statements, it’s unlikely he will take the fight.

Ryan Garcia’s doping situation didn’t just ruin his career, but even Devin Haney seems to be reeling through its consequences. At least Haney has Teofimo Lopez’s sympathy on the matter. What did you think about Lopez’s statement?
