Billy Joe Saunders Says Canelo Alvarez Has Never Fought a ‘Gypsy’ – Questions Callum Smith’s Motivation

The WBO super-middleweight champion, Billy Joe Saunders, is in contention to face Canelo Alvarez in his next outing. The Brit will defend his title against the Mexican boxer who is looking to unify the 168-pound division. Even though this is the biggest fight of Saunders’ life, he isn’t letting Alvarez get onto his nerves.

‘Superb’ was in a chat with talkSport wherein he shared his thoughts on the mighty Canelo Alvarez fight and more.

He said, “One thing Canelo Alvarez has never, ever, ever, ever done–he’s never fought a gypsy man, never. I’ve got something inside of me burning so strong that I’ll give my life, my soul, my everything to get the win.”

The 31-year-old seemed elevated to take on the pound for pound king of boxing. He cited himself as a ‘Gypsy’ and believes that he will give a stern test to the latter inside the ring.

Saunders even asserted that many fighters get blinded by money or fame. But the only thing that keeps him going is adding constant wins to his resume.

The undefeated boxer promised to put in the work of his life in order to outplay Canelo Alvarez.

Billy Joe Saunders feels Callum Smith didn’t possess a winning mentality

Callum Smith took the fight against Alvarez on short notice. Though Smith had an edge over Saul Alvarez in terms of height and reach, he got dominated by the latter throughout those 12 rounds.

It was also his first professional defeat. Talking about the same, Saunders felt that his fellow Brit didn’t truly walk into the ring with a winning mentality.

And I just felt that (Smith) taking the fight on five/six weeks’ notice was just a sign of, ‘I’m gonna go in there, get my money and I’ll see you all later,'” he added.

He took note of all that went wrong for Smith in the fight against Canelo.

Saunders feels if he cannot defeat Alvarez at this stage of his career, he can never beat him again. He acknowledges this bout as the most anticipated, where he wants to outsmart Alvarez and continue with his undefeated run.
