It was April last year when Devin Haney hit the canvas against Ryan Garcia, and now, after the May 2nd card, Bill Haney once again has plenty to say—though this time with a very different tone. As Rolando Romero shocked Times Square with a unanimous decision win over Garcia, Devin Haney not only secured his own dominant victory over Jose Ramirez on the same card, but also watched his former rival fall in the same way he once did. With the potential rematch with Garcia now looking uncertain, Bill Haney seems more focused on highlighting his son’s growth and success than revisiting old rivalries. But that’s not the only narrative Bill is steering.
While Canelo chalked up Garcia’s poor performance to ring rust, Bill Haney doubled down on Devin Haney’s performance, claiming it was so dominant that he sent Ramirez to the hospital—a statement quickly debunked by Ramirez’s trainer, Robert Garcia, who slammed the Haney camp for spreading misinformation. And now, with Jermall Charlo set to return against Thomas LaManna after being inactive throughout 2024, Bill Haney has shifted his sights again—this time aiming to shut down Charlo’s recent comments about his son.

Bill Haney takes aim at Jermall Charlo’s past
The latest update in the ongoing back-and-forth came from Boxing n BBQ, who posted a screenshot earlier today of a fiery tweet from Bill Haney, captioned, “Bill Haney coming back at Charlo.” In the tweet, Haney didn’t hold back, writing, “Jermall Charlo blew his whole career on bud and alcohol now he talking about Devin Haney 26, who got more money and more accomplishments than two ni**as named Charlo. 🤷🏽♂️”

This jab was aimed squarely at Jermall Charlo, who made headlines for the wrong reasons last year when he was arrested in Texas on three misdemeanors. In case you don’t remember, the charges followed a hit-and-run incident involving Charlo’s red Lamborghini, where he reportedly fled the scene while intoxicated. He was later released on a $9,500 bond, but the fallout didn’t end there. By the following day, he was stripped of his WBC middleweight title—a belt he hadn’t defended since June 2021.
So, with all that baggage, Bill Haney clearly felt Jermall Charlo was in no position to throw shade at his son, especially when The Dream has stayed clear of controversy and kept his record clean. But why did Devin Haney’s father feel the need to take a shot at Jermall Charlo? It might because of something the elder Charlo brother said yesterday during the official launch event of his PBC-Amazon Prime Video event on May 31.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Jermall Charlo right about Devin Haney being 'washed,' or is it just trash talk?

Jermall Charlo predicts Devin Haney’s fall
In their recent press conference at The Mayan in Los Angeles, California, where Rolando Romero was standing beside him, Jermall Charlo didn’t hold back when asked who ‘Rolly’ should fight next following his upset win over Ryan Garcia. “Looks like it would be Devin Haney. If Rolly wash him, then it’s like, he’s washed,” Charlo told the media, adding, “that makes a lot of sense and a lot of money.”

The Hit Man even suggested that for legacy’s sake, Romero should “go back and stop Dev,” listing either Haney or Gervonta Davis as the next logical step. And honestly, it’s hard to completely dismiss Jermall Charlo’s point.

While Haney did secure a win over Jose Ramirez, his overly cautious, defensive style left a bad taste in fans’ mouths. Haney avoided damage, yes, but he also avoided engagement. If Haney had looked sharp and fearless, there might still be buzz around a big-money rematch with Ryan Garcia. But now? It looks dicey.
So with that said, do you agree with Jermall Charlo? Would you still want to see Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney next? Or has the narrative shifted enough that Rolly vs. Haney feels like the fresher, more exciting choice?
