Top Rank’s Bob Arum has voiced his opinion on lightweight sensation Ryan Garcia. Despite all the global hype, Arum is not impressed with the 22-year-old. The promoter even pointed out flaws in his game.

This was regarding Ryan Garcia’s impressive victory over Luke Campbell on January 2. He silenced many critics when he won, despite getting knocked down. However, he could not bring Arum to jump up on the bandwagon.

Speaking to iFL TV, Arum said, “Ryan Garcia is a talent, no question about it. [But] he has a lot a lot of flaws I mean, his footwork is bad.” Arum then discredited his victory over Campbell. He gave his explanation for the American’s victory.

He said the Englishman tends to go into fights with an intention to not lose the bout. We saw this in his fights against Vasyl Lomachenko and Jorge Linares, where he never pressured his opponent. Arum said this fed into the hands of a ‘young, strong kid who can punch’.

Bob Arum said Luke Campbell could have won the fight

The promoter also claimed that Campbell had what it takes to beat ‘KingRy’. He said if the Englishman changed his approach, the fight would have been very different.

“Because if Campbell had gone in with the mindset to win the fight when he knocked Garcia down, he would have pressed the action. And he might have taken Garcia out,” said Arum.

Since Arum doesn’t think Garcia is a complete fighter yet, it could increase the chances of him fighting one of Top Rank’s fighters. However, the best lightweight in the Top Rank roster, Teofimo Lopez, has said he will not fight Garcia.

As the promoter said, Garcia is undoubtedly talented and packs a punch. The Campbell fight was a stepping stone to greater things. However, if Arum’s comments are anything to go by, he has a long way to go.
