The truth is, at this point, Canelo Alvarez can do whatever he wants. After nearly finalizing a May fight with Jake Paul back in February, he scrapped that plan and instead signed a four-fight deal reportedly worth $400 million with HE Turki Alalshikh. And if he keeps landing deals of this magnitude, he’s well on his way to surpassing the career earnings of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Even though his sleep-inducing win over William Scull on May 3, during the Cinco de Mayo weekend, earned him the title of two-time undisputed super middleweight champion and an $80 million payday, his next fight with Terence Crawford could flip the script for the Mexican champion.

“I hope September comes in another kind of fight,” said the 63-2 boxer after his recent bout in Riyadh. Maybe for a seasoned fighter like Canelo Alvarez, putting his undisputed super middleweight titles on the line against a 41-0 boxer who’s moving up two weight classes might be more thrilling than threatening. And while reports suggest the Guadalajara native will earn close to $150 million for the bout, the amount Terence Crawford is receiving has been kept under tight wraps. This became the point of discussion between two boxing commentators on their show.

A few hours ago, @theboxingvoice shared a short clip of 2Tone and Nestor Gibbs on Instagram discussing Terence Crawford’s upcoming fight, marking his first return to the ring in 2025, just three months from now. In the video, Gibbs pointedly asked 2Tone, “How much you think Crawford is making?” To this, 2Tone confidently responded, “I think 50Ms.”

If we go by what 2Tone has stated, the $100 million purse gap between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford is hard to ignore. While Crawford’s take-home pay is significantly lighter, it still marks a surge from the $8 million he earned in his unanimous decision win over Israil Madrimov in August last year. However, Crawford agrees that this fight with Canelo Alvarez has the potential to surpass the $440 million milestone set by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao a decade ago.

According to Crawford, the historic and cultural impact of a “Black vs. Mexican” rivalry. “I’ve always did bigger numbers than anything. You know, besides Manny Pacquiao-Floyd and Floyd-Conor McGregor,” Crawford said, pointing to the cross-cultural pull he believes this fight holds. According to him, the bout has the same kind of commercial and emotional draw that made those past blockbusters global events.

Despite the epic nature of the fight, it is shocking to believe that Terence Crawford may only earn $50 million, since earlier reports suggested he may earn substantially more than that. But judging by how much they are paying Canelo, it’s not too wrong to think that Crawford is making comparatively less than Canelo, since the 34-year-old is known for taking home close to 80% of his event’s revenue.

But with one person involved, it may not be the case anymore. We’re talking about the UFC president.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Canelo Alvarez's $100 million advantage over Crawford justified, or is it just boxing politics?

Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez poised to live up to the hype

As teased earlier this year by His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, Dana White is officially stepping into the boxing world. With TKO Boxing partnering up with Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority for their ambitious new boxing league, the UFC president will be one of the driving forces behind the highly anticipated Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford megafight on September 12.

Reacting to the news, former UFC double champ and longtime MMA commentator Daniel Cormier shared his thoughts in a YouTube video, expressing excitement over White’s involvement. “I do believe that added element, that Dana’s going to be promoting, that Riyadh Season is going to be promoting, is going to make more people tap into what’s going on in this big fight. They’re going to sell out Allegiant Stadium,” Cormier said with confidence.

Cormier also confirmed he’ll be in the crowd when the two champions face off and made it clear just how motivated Terence Crawford is heading into the bout. While giving props to Canelo Alvarez for everything he’s accomplished, Cormier added, “I hope that it can deliver, match or exceed the expectation.”

However, will Dana White put up with Canelo Alvarez’s demands is still a bit uncertain. With that kind of person trying to promote a Canelo fight, things are bound to get interesting for the next couple of months.

That said, Cormier’s stamp of approval certainly boosts confidence in Dana White’s transition into boxing. With a blockbuster fight like Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford already in the lineup, the stakes are sky-high. The real test? Seeing if Dana White can carry that UFC success into this new boxing venture. What’s your take—can he pull it off?
