Now, The National Professional Boxing Promoters Association has come out and revealed the real reason why Mayweather was not paid to make an appearance in the tournament.

Boxing Association dismisses paying Floyd Mayweather

According to DispatchLive, the promoters of the event wanted the payment to be made using government money. However, the NBSPA refused to do this, claiming that the money could be used to promote sports in the country. The chairman of the association Ayanda Matiti stated that although they were excited to see Mayweather, they were not aware that the government would pay for his expense. Once this was revealed the association decides to use the sums to better develop the sport in the country.

We then came out publicly through our statement that [it] will not happen. If such an amount was available from the government, then it must be used for development of the sport in provinces and promote the South African title and not spend it on someone. A super-rich billionaire like Floyd for that matter, who is not going to do even some philanthropic work.” he said.

The association made a wise choice in using the money earlier earmarked for Mayweather to fund projects in their country. However, the CEO of the organization has denied requesting external funds to pay the former champ.

The CEO of the promotion denies requesting money from the association

According to the CEO of J4Joy promotions, Arnold Nododile, the company never requested funds from the NBSPA. He stated that this was an attempt by Matiti to sabotage the event as he could not acquire the services of Mayweather.

I don’t really have anything to say. It is baseless to say we requested R20 million from the government. That was a malicious attempt to sabotage the event.” he said.

This event was certainly a rollercoaster ride with more politics involved than an average boxing event. Thus, it was no surprise that Mayweather opted not to plead for his payment which he was denied.
