The recent change to the camp of former champion Deontay Wilder has sparked some vigorous debate within the boxing community. Chiefly, Sky Sports analyst and former champion Johnny Nelson spoke to iFL TV and commented on the massive change. Long time co-trainer Mark Breland will no longer be in Wilder’s corner heading into the highly anticipated trilogy bout.

Breland was responsible for throwing in the towel when Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder scrapped for the second time. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ was getting lit up by Fury and was dropped twice in the bout before the stoppage. Additionally, Wilder didn’t want any part of Breland’s decision, to say the least, and they have now parted ways.

Boxing fans, pundits, and fighters are split down the middle on the matter and have been sure to speak out on the matter. Furthermore, former WBC interim champion Dillian Whyte called Wilder “an idiot” and largely didn’t see the merit in letting Breland go.

“Deontay Wilder is an idiot, he clearly can’t see it. Good luck to him, it’s his team, he can do whatever he wants. But I think it’s a bad mistake. Mark Breland is the only one that knows boxing in his team.”

Johnny Nelson chimes in on the trainer change for Deontay Wilder

Nelson sided with Whyte’s assessment on the matter and broke down the demerits of not having a maestro like Breland in Wilder’s corner. Moreover, these sentiments are largely echoed amongst various prominent figures in boxing.

“Exactly the same as Dillian’s ‘stupid’. To me, Breland was the only brains, true brains in that corner that knew our sport inside out. Obviously, they split up because of the disagreement, I’m assuming. Why else would they split up? That means Deontay disagrees with him and he disagrees with Deontay.”

He broke down the wealth of experience that Mark Breland brought to the table. Also, he also spoke out on the coach’s reserved nature and how it complimented the overall camp.

“Deontay hasn’t got the experience of Mark Breland. Mark Breland was a slickster, he could fight. Why would you…We consume than that the split was about him being thrown under the bus when he got stopped and the towel was thrown in. Where’s the knowledge? Where’s the wisdom? Whare’s the expertise that you’re gonna work with?”

“Mark Breland is not a loud, braggadocious individual saying ‘look at me’. He’s quiet, he’s calculated, he’s smart. He knows what he’s doing… Why would you get rid of him? That’s a no brainer.”

Chiefly, there’s no doubt that a camp change going into a critical trilogy fight will have a significant impact. The highly-anticipated showdown will come to a head early into December as targeted by Top Ranks’ Bob Arum.
