Leading the charge among the sanctioning bodies, the WBC conducted a thorough investigation into Alycia Baumgardner after she tested positive for mesterolone. On 15 January, they even gave the undisputed featherweight champion a clean chit. However, legendary boxing promoter Lou DiBella isn’t happy about the decision.

With revenge coursing through her veins, ‘The Bomb’ took on Christina Linardatou on 15 July last year, winning the fight via UD. However, in mid-August, results came back positive from a sample taken on 12 July for the banned substance. Fast track to today, reacting to WBC’s decision to declare Baumgardner “not guilty of intentional ingestion,” DiBella wrote some choice words on X.

The same update from WBC was shared by a user on X, and when the boxing promoter discovered it, he bubbled up with anger. In his tweet, DiBella expressed that he could not believe the decision from WBC while condemning the sport itself. “Not guilty of “INTENTIONAL INGESTION”???? I can’t. F**k [boxing.],” DiBella wrote in his tweet.

He proceeded to condemn the existence of PED regulations, stating, “Let’s stop making believe that there is any PED regulation in boxing.” However, his harsh comments regarding the situation didn’t end there, as he wrote, “Nothing is consistent, enforced, rational, or CLEAN. #Boxing is unclean…and I’m not just talking about PED tests.”  While DiBella isn’t happy about the outcome, here’s what Baumgardner had to say about her tests.

Alycia Baumgardner claims she will defend her titles soon

In a podcast with Shaquille O’Neal, shared on YouTube on 11 January, Baumgardner addressed her situation, claiming, “This whole ordeal has been a lot, just to say the least. It’s been mentally challenging. It has been financially draining.” ‘The Bomb’ added that she has been very vocal with the sanctioning bodies, her fans, and the media about the situation to prove her innocence. She also added, “I’ve never cheated. I never doped in my life to be ahead…I’m still here. I will be out very soon to defend my titles.”

It’s also worth mentioning that other sanctioning bodies and the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission have not announced their stance on Baumgardner’s drug fiasco. Moreover, after the initial finding on 16 August, the Michigan native said in a public statement, “The sample provided immediately after my fight…tested clean and negative for all banned substances…which makes the July 12th result essentially impossible.”

While the WBC has given a clean chit to Baumgardner, other sanctioning bodies are yet to follow suit. Meanwhile, DiBella didn’t hide his discontent with the decision, so it would be interesting to see what other sanctioning bodies say about it. Do you agree with WBC’s decision?

One take at a time

The first time boxing captured my attention, it was because of a line I heard in the film 'Rocky Balboa', a film surrounding boxing. The line went like this, "But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
