Jaime Munguia has edged other names to bag a fight with the super middleweight champion for a May 4 clash. The talks have intensified as the clock is ticking.

The rat race for the slot of super middleweight champion’s opponent had names popping up and exiting the rumors. However, nothing concrete followed. With the PBC not able to make a favorable fight for Alvarez, a disagreement over the purse and the question of David Benavidez ensured the relationship broke beyond repair. While a hard-hitting Edgar Berlanga also joined the conversation, it never gained steam. Ultimately, it’s Alvarez’s 27-year-old compatriot who won the race to his signature with almost 8 weeks left in the fight.

Michael Benson turned to his X handle and broke the news first reported by ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez. He wrote, “Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia is reportedly now close to being agreed for Canelo’s undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF & WBO super-middleweight world titles on May 4th in Las Vegas. [According to@ChavaESPN]”

After screening the likes of Jermall Charlo, Munguia appeared to be a reasonable choice for the Mexican champion. Not only did the PBC hesitate to shell out $35 million for the Charlo fight, but it also failed to generate a buzz among fans. Meanwhile, Munguia’s popularity is hitting its peak with boxing fans.

His recent KO win against John Ryder, who went the distance with Alvarez last year, tipped the scales in his favor. Notably, it’ll be the first time two Mexicans square off against each other for the undisputed crown at 168. Interestingly, the previous reports had suggested that Alvarez, 33, wanted Berlanga as his Cinco de Mayo opponent, with Munguia taking the September slot. But it was DAZN, whose preferred choice was Munguia.

All this chaos over a fight with Alvarez has left the fans confused, especially David Benavidez, who has decided to move up and challenge for the title despite being the WBC interim champion for almost 2 years. But it seems the dust has finally settled.
