Boxing legend Mike Tyson came up in poverty with no actual parental guidance until he met his former coach and mentor, Cus D’Amato. This naturally made Iron Mike an angry and frustrated child. Moreover, D’Amato was able to channel this anger into Tyson’s boxing, making him a fearsome and ruthless foe.

However, it seems that the former heavyweight champion does not want to go back to that state of mind as he made a brutally honest confession about this.

Mike Tyson makes an honest confession

Tyson recently made an appearance on FoxNews where he was asked by Tucker Carlson why he felt like wanting to ‘kill’ his opponents before he fought them. Tyson then stated that he was in a ‘poverty state ‘ of mind back then. However, he added that he did not want to go back to that place where such feelings could take over him.

I just think about who I am. I don’t wanna go back there no more. I don’t want to be in a poverty state of mind anymore and not from a physical perspective. I don’t want to be poverty stuck over here” said Tyson.

Despite once being ruthless and unsympathetic towards his opponents and other people, Tyson has come a long way in changing himself and becoming the best version he can be. Moreover, given his upbringing and the tribulations he faced throughout his life, it is no less than a miracle that ‘Iron Mike ‘ has changed so much from his former self.

Tyson details how he handles criticism now

Later in the show, Tyson also detailed how he now handled criticism. He stated that he would become a ‘nobody’ in his mind, which meant that there was no one to actually criticize. “Yeah, I suppose, but mostly yeah, but it still it can get even better sometimes. I get in my head and think I’m somebody and then I’m easily offended, but when I’m nobody, I can never be offended,” he said.

Tyson might now be very adept at handling criticism. However, there was a time when he got into altercations with almost anybody. This included media reporters, his opponents, and sometimes even his promoters. Despite that, he has matured a lot as he can now take criticism without threatening the other person.
