The much-hyped Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney rematch in September was supposed to be a done deal. However, reality hit the two fighters harder than a freight train when the fight night finally came around. After causing a whirlwind of drama last year in April, ‘King Ry’ and ‘The Dream’ were supposed to fight on the same card for what appeared to be their tune-up fights. Having stayed on the sidelines of boxing for a year, it was a test for them to eventually face each other for a much-hyped rematch in September. However, things rarely go as planned in the sport of boxing, and the current Garcia vs. Haney rematch situation is the perfect example of the same. Despite the current hiccup, there seems to be a glimmer of hope left, but it came with a repercussion.
So, what’s going on? You see, with plans set, Haney and Garcia met Rolly Romero and Jose Ramirez on Friday night in New York. Haney seems to have adopted a new approach to win fights. Instead of using his boxing skills, he has decided to take up running, which became evident when he kept running away from Ramirez for 12 agonizing rounds. Ultimately, he won the fight via unanimous decision, but for the length of the fight, it was nothing less than an eyesore. On the other hand, Ryan Garcia seemed overconfident, as he rushed in to fight Romero in the pocket, and was subsequently knocked down by his signature left hook in the second round.
After the knockdown, Garcia remained gun-shy, producing another slow fight. To make things worse, though, Garcia ended up losing the fight via unanimous decision, leaving the fate of the Haney rematch uncertain. Despite all this, it appears the rematch could still go ahead. According to Hassan on X, the rematch is still happening, but both Garcia and Haney have been docked $30 million from their purse because of the performances they presented. “Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia REPORTEDLY FUMBLED $30 Million EACH from Turki Alalsikh for their REMATCH because of their PERFORMANCES LAST NIGHT!!” Hassan wrote.

However, it’s worth noting that no details about the alleged rematch payouts have been revealed officially. It’s known that both Garcia and Haney signed a two-fight deal with the Saudis, but the understanding was that both of them had to win their May 2nd fights to have their rematch sometime in October. It’s unclear what the future really holds for the two bitter rivals.
In the meantime, Garcia’s former gymmate has reacted to Garcia’s loss.
Canelo Alvarez on the Ryan Garcia loss
Following Ryan Garcia’s shocking loss to Rolly Romero on May 2, two-time undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez shared his thoughts on the upset. Garcia wanted to train alongside Canelo under Eddy Reynoso, but Canelo’s fight against William Scull the next day in Riyadh made it impossible.

Canelo, who trained with Garcia in 2018 and 2019, reacted to Garcia’s loss by offering a measured response when asked about Garcia’s defeat. “I feel sorry for him,” Canelo told Fight Hub TV. “But it’s boxing. It’s boxing. You know, things happen.” While Canelo also faced criticism for an unexciting performance, he walked away with the win—and reportedly a $100 million purse.
That said, if Hassan’s tweet is to be believed, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney would get the opportunity to settle their score despite presenting non-PPV worthy fights on Friday. Do you think it will happen?
