BREAKING: Alexander Povetkin Tests Positive for COVID-19 – Rematch With Dillian Whyte Canceled

Unfortunately, the heavyweight rematch between WBC interim champion Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte will not happen on November 21, as the former has been tested positive for COVID-19. Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has recently revealed the news with a social media post, assuring to reschedule the fight on some other date.

While we were just a couple of weeks away from the contest, Alexander Povetkin couldn’t escape the strangles of Coronavirus. Matchroom will now focus on restructuring their event on November 21, since it is already out of a stellar main event. That said, Dillian Whyte will have to wait longer until he gets a crack at Povetkin again.

Although Matchroom has set up several events for the fans in November, Whyte vs Povetkin 2 was one of the biggest PPVs in the mix. Thus, it is a tremendous blow to the fight fans who were expecting a blockbuster heavyweight thriller.

The bad news has already disturbed the entire fight community, with several people pitching their opinion on it. Meanwhile, Hearn has vowed to reschedule the fight on January 30 after Povetkin returns safely from the pandemic.

Turning to Instagram, the boxing promoter wrote, “Unfortunately we got the news today that ‘Alexander Povetkin’ is in hospital after testing positive for COVID-19. The fight will now be rescheduled to a target date of Jan 30. A further announcement on our Nov 21 show will be made shortly.”

That said, Hearn has got some other ideas on his mind too. If not Povetkin, he asks Tyson Fury to face Dillian Whyte in his next appearance. He took to Twitter and wrote, “Dillian Whyte v Tyson Fury anyone?”

Amid all the rigmarole, Povetkin will still be the WBC interim heavyweight champion. He will defend his title after returning safely to the ring. Meanwhile, Hearn will try his best to find a perfect opponent for Dillian Whyte, and he has already begun his hunt by aiming a ‘The Gypsy King.’
