British Fans Blamed for Upsetting Referee in the Floyd Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton Fight

In 2007, Floyd Mayweather took part in an action-packed fight against the Brit, Ricky Hatton. Mayweather took many fights in his career, and a fight with Hatton truly ranks as one of his best outings. This contest took place at the iconic MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Also, the support for Hatton was on top as there were many British fans present in the arena to cheer for him.

However, these fans did something unexpected which might have upset the referee, Joe Cortez.

Ricky Hatton was recently in a chat with BT Sport Boxing. Here, he spilled the beans on what actually happened.

He said, “We have a TV in the changing rooms where when you’re warming up you can watch the previous fights or watching the national anthem”

“This gentleman come and sing the national anthem for America and they started booing him and I thought, I looked at Billy when, this ain’t a good sign”

“I think I think it I think upset a few people. I think the referee might have been one as well.”

“Not saying that’s the reason why I got beat, just because of the referee, but I don’t think it matters.”

The Briton started off the fight well, and he even caught Mayweather with a massive shot in round 1. ‘TBE’ got wobbled, but he collected himself somehow. Also, Mayweather employed his slick counterattacks in the later rounds, pressing Hatton simultaneously.

Both the fighters showcased a clean track record in this fight. That said, they were expected to go all guns blazing against each other.

Hatton couldn’t find much success in the later rounds. But he refrained from cutting on his pace. However, it was round 10 when ‘Pretty Boy’ caught him with a counterpunch, putting him down to the canvas.

Hatton gained a vertical base, but Mayweather smothered him again to bag a T/KO win in round 10 itself.

Regardless of the results, this fight kept the fans at the edge of their seats for obvious reasons. Also, Mayweather proved in this fight as to why he was the best fighter of his era.
