However, since the fight was officially announced by PBC for the Mexican independence day, a new clip has started making the rounds on X. The clip was shared by talkSport editor Michael Benson, where Canelo can be seen hitting the heavy bag at a rather slow pace, leaving many to fear for the upcoming bout against Berlanga!

This won’t scare Edgar Berlanga

Earlier today, Benson shared the clip in question with the caption, “Canelo Alvarez smashing the heavy bag today ahead of the Edgar Berlanga fight on Sept 14th…” Canelo had a bad rep with fans to begin with for actively avoiding a match against David Benavidez, who is his WBC mandatory for quite a while.

But opting to fight Berlanga seems to have sent people into tirade. Regardless, Berlanga, who is undefeated, will face Canelo in the biggest fight of his career thus far. So, seeing Canelo slowing down on the heavy bag wasn’t received well by the boxing community, who took apart the clip bit by bit.

Canelo Alvarez fails to impress the masses

Despite winning his last four fights, the clip didn’t inspire confidence in fans about Canelo’s abilities. One user seems to think they can do way better in terms of speed and power. But Canelo might not be aiming for that, instead, the heavy bag can also be used for conditioning, accuracy, and timing of the punches.

Meanwhile, one Canelo supporter seems to have filtered in to claim that the bag had better movement than Berlanga. At the start of his career, Berlanga won his first 16 fights via a knockout, so there’s no denying he does have talent.

Someone else highlighted, the last time Canelo won a fight via knockout, it was three years ago, so the slow heavy bag routine didn’t impress him. Interestingly, some speculate ‘Cinnamon’ doesn’t want to take any risks in the final years of his boxing career by aiming for KO wins.

Another user suggested if the fight goes beyond five or max seven rounds, it would be a bad look for Canelo. But this is a bit unfair, not every opponent needs to be knocked out to win the bout. Often boxing styles make it difficult, and pursuing a KO has its own pitfalls.

The next user mocked Canelo for grunting after each punch, suggesting, despite all the grunting, Canelo won’t fight David Benavidez. Actually, Canelo has demanded $200 million to fight Benavidez—while that can be seen as ducking, it could also mean Canelo knows the value of such a bout.

Despite having defeated some of the biggest names in the sport, Canelo Alvarez is once again faced with sceptics. Perhaps, only the Benavidez fight can prove everyone wrong. But did the heavy bag clip make you feel Canelo is slowing down?
