Caleb Plant vs. Trevor McCumby undeniably was the highlight of last weekend’s Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga card in Las Vegas. While Erislandy Lara and Danny Garcia brought the action to a halt—quite literally—and Rolly Romero‘s performance faded into the background, it was Plant and McCumby who injected the event with much-needed excitement and energy. However, are they the sole reason the event has allegedly sold over 750,000 PPVs and $22,000,000 million gate?

While that might not be the case, Plant and McCumby feel they definitely were the stars of the show, which they openly announced on social media after discovering the rumored numbers. Earlier today, an X account with the name @BOXINGFOTY revealed the numbers, claiming it was one of the biggest events in recent boxing history. If the numbers are true, that wouldn’t be incorrect, especially considering Canelo vs. Jaime Munguia did 500–550k PPVs, and Canelo vs. Jermell Charlo did somewhere between 650,000 to 700,000 pay-per-view buys.

This sheds light on how the Canelo-Berlanga numbers were achieved—largely due to Canelo Alvarez and the historic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry that fueled the excitement. Regardless, when McCumby found these numbers, he hopped on X to congratulate Plant for the success and wrote, “I think we stole the show. Congrats to @SweetHandsPlant 🤝. Thanks for the opportunity. I’LL BE BACK.”

Seeing his opponent’s tweet, Plant saw fit to wish McCumby back for his part in making their exchange in the ring last Saturday an entertaining affair. Plant wrote, “@T_RevMcCumby I think we did. Best of luck in the future bro 🤝.” While these two seemed respectful on social media after their fight, that wasn’t the case during the fight.

Caleb Plant brings back his popular taunt

Caleb Plant brought back his iconic ‘gravedigger’ celebration following his thrilling ninth-round stoppage of Trevor McCumby. The taunt, which became famous after his knockout of Anthony Dirrell in 2022, made a return as Plant secured the WBA interim super-middleweight title in a high-stakes fight.

Plant faced early trouble when McCumby landed hard shots in the second and scored a body-shot knockdown in the fourth. Despite the setbacks, ‘Sweethands’ made smart adjustments, smothering McCumby and gradually turning the tide. By the ninth round, Plant had taken full control, pinning McCumby against the ropes and forcing the referee to stop the fight.

That being said, were Plant and McCumby the reason for such high PPV and gate numbers? Unlikely. However, they indeed saved the entire event from being a snooze fest with their punchy performance.
