Caleb Plant finally has his next fight set against Jose Armando Resendiz on May 31st. However, his sights remain on Edgar Berlanga firmly. It is a fight that every fan wants to see because of their long-standing bitter feud. It also has two of the biggest stars of the 168 lbs division, and with Plant holding the Interim WBA super middleweight title, the stakes are high. So, why hasn’t it come together yet?

On the surface, it looks like both fighters are desperate to get in the ring. They have been trading barbs on and off the field for a while now, and after his first-round comeback victory last month, The Chosen One called out Plant explicitly. But behind closed doors, the story shifts. Plant recently shed light on why his latest push to finalize the bout fell through, hinting at roadblocks that aren’t immediately obvious.

No dice, says Edgar Berlanga

Yesterday prominent boxing ‘X’ page @dantheboxingman posted a snippet from Caleb Plant’s recent Instagram live session. The snippet featured Sweethands revealing that his team reached out to Berlanga’s team after the recent call-out. “My manager, personally, Luis DeCubas, reached out to Edgar Berlanga’s manager, Keith Connolly, & tried to make a fight for later this summer,” he revealed.

The Interim WBA super middleweight champ’s team figured talks would be straightforward, given Berlanga’s apparent eagerness for the matchup and their burgeoning animosity. However, that is not how the negotiations turned out. “He(Berlanga) turned it down. He didn’t want to(fight),” Plant stated. Given that the Puerto Rican called Plant out only a few days ago, this was unexpected.

This is a rather unfortunate and unprecedented turn of events for a fight that was predicted one of 2025’s marquee events. However, with Plant’s recent admission, the odds of it happening this year have taken a slight hit.

However, despite allegedly rejecting the fight, Edgar Berlanga has not backed down from his usual barbs. As Caleb Plant’s next fight got confirmed, The Chosen One didn’t hold back in mocking Sweethands for his choice of opponent, forgetting his own recent fight.

Caleb Plant given a reality check

Edgar Berlanga took to his ‘X’ and wrote, “All the sh*t @SweetHandsPlant was talking. Now he’s fighting a prospect that’s not ranked and has 2 losses,” throwing a shade at Plant’s next opponent Jose Armando Resendiz. The Mexican fighter has a 15-2 record and isn’t ranked anywhere at the moment.

This was a rather surprising decision from Plant, and it has become a subject of derision for him. After all, in a rather stacked 168 division, he could have chosen anyone, yet he picked an unranked fighter. Berlanga further added, “You are a f**king disgrace to boxing, man; it’s f**king sad!”

Given Berlanga recently fought on the undercard of Austin Williams-Patrice Volny’s card against unranked Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz, the dig seemed rather hypocritical. Something that fans let him know about in the comment section.

In an ideal world, Edgar Berlanga vs Caleb Plant would have already happened. Furthermore, with the duo getting criticized for their recent bout, this bout would have elevated them again. However, with the Puerto Rican shooting down the offer, the fight is now off the table for the foreseeable future.
