David Benavidez issues a chilling warning

While the fight concluded controversially, undoubtedly both fighters put on a performance of a lifetime. David Morrell was the first to reach the post-match press conference and was already answering questions before the 30-0 boxer arrived. The latter went ahead and shook Cuban’s hand, putting all the bad blood aside, with Morrell reciprocating Benavidez’s gesture. However, while there, he once again got into an argument with DeCubas.

The Cuban promoter refused to shake hands with David Benavidez and shouted toward him and his team, “They called me a thief. He called me a thief, man,” referring to the scathing remarks Benavidez made during their last press conference alleging DeCubas Sr was making more money from their fight than his fighter, David Morrell.

As Benavidez sat down, the harangue from DeCubas continued. David Benavidez’s father Jose Benavidez Sr even replied, “We never called you a thief.” However, the trading of barbs continued. “I wish I could trade checks with you,” stated DeCubas Sr. David Benavidez quickly replied that he “would never work with” DeCubas. But what sent the bickering over the line was DeCubas calling them “snitch.” This was enough to send David Benavidez into a fit of rage. Benavidez immediately threatened to “slap the f**k outta you,” before David Morrell, his father, and other crewmates intervened to break up the confrontation between the fighter and the IBHF Hall Of Famer 2023 nominee.

Evidently, DeCubas’ frustration also comes from the controversial decision granting Benavidez the victory. However, he was not the only one who was quite irritated by it. Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, also expressed considerable anger about the decision and went on a rant on social media.

Gervonta Davis hits out at the referee over bad call

From the first bell, Bandera Roja was on the front foot and was putting pressure on his Cuban opponent. David Morrell was focusing on counters in the early round, allowing the 30-0 to brush past his guard and defense.

By the 8th round, Benavidez had landed far more punches and was in control of the fight. As a result, Morrell had to go on offense in the championship rounds and even secured a knockdown in the 11th. However, in a surprise move, the referee not only refused to score it a knockdown, he even deducted a point from the Cuban for punching after the bell.

The point deduction put Benavidez on top once again and the final score-card read 115-111, 115-111, and 118-108. The surprising point deduction irked Gervonta Davis, as he hopped on ‘X’ and took a shot at the referee and wrote, “The ref cheatingggg!!!”

Like always, Tank later deleted the tweet but made sure to praise David Morrell for the efforts. He wrote, “This my first time seeing Morrell fight..son quick to be that size,” as Cuban’s speed and footwork quite surprised Davis.

Whether the referee was right to deduct a point from Morrell or not is up for debate. However, David Benavidez and David Morrell undoubtedly stole the show, but it looks like Luis DeCubas Sr is still not over their feud. How this bad blood progresses, only time will tell.
