The Mexican has accumulated an incredible 55-1-2 record which shows his solitary defeat. This defeat came back in 2013 when a 23-year-old Alvarez took on legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather. Unfortunately for the Mexican, it was too soon a challenge, and he came up short.

Mayweather outclassed the future multi-weight champion from the first round by using his superior movement. He then landed several powerful counters before knocking out the youngster in the seventh round. To this day, that is the only loss in Alvarez’s glittering career.

Canelo Alvarez almost lost to Gennady Golovkin

Since his defeat to Floyd Mayweather, Alvarez picked himself up and won several world titles. He even adapted his game to a similar style as that of Mayweather’s and worked on his defensive movement. However, there is still one more blemish on his near-perfect record.

The only other time fans felt Canelo Alvarez lost, was his first fight against Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin. They met in 2017 and provided fans with a classic. However, Golovkin got the better of all the exchanges, and many felt he pipped Alvarez to the win. Despite this, the judges ruled it as a split decision draw.

As a result, the pair had a rematch in 2018, and this time Alvarez adopted a better strategy and beat the Kazakh. Despite the victory in the rematch, many critics still point to the first fight as a defeat for Alvarez.
