“If you see his record, he just beat 1 good fighter,” were the words by Canelo Alvarez that created a lot of stir back in 2023. The unified super middleweight shocked every Terence Crawford fan with his statement as he decided to reject the fight.
A year and a half later, here we are, eagerly anticipating the fight between the two to materialize. With the negotiations between the two camps underway, these old statements are picking up fire once again. Only a few days ago, when someone reposted a snippet of the 2023 interview, Terence Crawford’s sister took offense to Canelo’s insinuation. “They all sing the same song😂,” remarked Latisha Crawford on X. However, in a conversation with the Ring Magazine, the Guadalajara native cleared the air around his old statement and confirmed the possibility of a clash.

Canelo Alvarez respects Terence Crawford’s “abilities”
In a conversation with Mike Coppinger for the Ring Magazine, the ESPN journalist asked Canelo about the Crawford fight and his thoughts about on Bud. The interviewer agreed with the fact that even if the unified champion defeats Terence Crawford, critics will think of their weight disparity as the reason for the former undisputed welterweight champion’s loss.

However, it does not look like Canelo cares about those criticisms. According to him, it has only helped grow the hype for the fight as fans now want to see it even more. “Yeah people want to see that fight and maybe they see that fight,” Canelo revealed.
The 34-year-old then talked about the possibility of the fight before stating how great of a fighter Terence Crawford is. “Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good fighter, with really good abilities and everything,” admitted Canelo Alvarez. “Maybe we’ll see that fight. Maybe. We don’t know yet,” he added, confirming the possibility of the fight.
In the same conversation, the 62-2 boxer also came clean about why he would rather accept a Terence Crawford fight than a David Benavidez fight.
What’s your perspective on:
Does Canelo's dismissive attitude towards Crawford show confidence or disrespect in the boxing world?
Have an interesting take?
Too much disrespect from David Benavidez
According to Canelo Alvarez, he didn’t accept the challenge because of the disrespect that Benavidez and his father showed him. If he had said yes to the fight even after that, the 28-year-old would have earned his highest payday, no matter the result, and he refused to oblige that. “At this point, I fight with everybody with every champion. With all the best out there. And when somebody approach you like that and call you out like that, you don’t need to give them money. So like I say, I can do whatever I want now and just I don’t like the way he approaches for taking the fight,” Canelo explained.
Even after the disrespect, the unified super middleweight champion has not ruled out the bout entirely. “But like I say, you never know too. Maybe someday I wake up and I say I want to this that guy,” admitted the 34-year-old. But at this point, this clash seems highly unlikely as Benavidez is preparing to face David Morrell and has plans to stay at 175 lbs. Meanwhile, hopefully, Canelo and Crawford come to an agreement and fans get to see that fight this year.
It looks like Canelo Alvarez knows the fuss his year-old statement has created, but he simply does not care. He wants to fight against the best fighters and, as he has said countless times,
“He can do whatever he wants. “ADVERTISEMENT
